New Mexico’s Applied Liberal Arts and Sciences University

Home to the New Mexico Center of Excellence for Early Childhood Education, the distinguished Schools of Nursing and Business, and one of the nation’s original Hispanic-Serving Institutions, WNMU is an open-access university offering opportunities for students launching their educational journey or returning to school to continue their studies.

Modernizing Processes

Transitioning from paper-based records to a secure, campus-wide digital system is critical to improving efficiency, ensuring regulatory compliance and protecting institutional data.

Project: Plan, purchase and implement software for paperless processes and documentation over the next three years.

Home to the Only NM Center of Excellence for Early Childhood Education

Reinvesting in communities is a critical component in the education and training of educators. WNMU is setting the standard in developing the future of how meaningful, culturally responsive education is delivered, both in and out of the classroom.

Project: Purchase and renovate Sixth Street School for use as NM Center of Excellence for Early Childhood Education facility.

Assuring Continued Opportunity Growth

Following a cybersecurity incident that impacted university systems, from admissions applications to academic program websites, the university was unable to promote, process or accept new students during a critical time of year.

Project: Strategic institutional investment in recruitment, retention, and student support services to accelerate enrollment recovery and stabilize long-term institutional growth following the cyber incident.

Securing Critical Systems

In today’s digital environment, Western New Mexico University is proactively strengthening its network security infrastructure to protect institutional systems, safeguard sensitive data, and ensure reliable access to academic and administrative resources for students, faculty, and staff.

Project: Purchase of equipment and temporary contracting of remote technical staff to restore systems and address critical network security gaps across campus, strengthening the network against future cybersecurity threats.

Supporting Students and Sports Fans Alike

Upgrading the HVAC systems in university athletics facilities is essential to ensuring the health, safety and comfort of student-athletes and Mustang Athletics fans, allowing events to be enjoyed consistently. A modernized system supports optimal athletic performance, enhances the spectator experience, and protects facilities by maintaining stable indoor environments year-round.

Project: Purchase and installation of HVAC systems for the university’s athletics facilities.

Total: $4.5 million

Investing in Scientific Know-How

Modern science equipment and well-equipped laboratories are critical to providing hands-on, experiential learning, enabling students to apply theoretical knowledge, develop practical skills and engage in research that prepares them for careers in science, technology and related fields.

Project: Modernization of outdated equipment for biology and other science classrooms and laboratories.

Modernizing Student Academic Support – ASWNMU

Establishing a modern, centralized learning hub is essential to improving student success, retention and degree completion. A centralized space for tutoring services and academic technology will provide equitable access to support resources and better meet the academic needs of both on-campus and online learners.

Project: Planning and construction of a centralized hub to include tutoring spaces and tech-enabled study areas.

Preserving Campus Infrastructure and Aesthetics – ASWNMU

Upgrading the campus irrigation system is essential to preserving campus beauty, protecting existing landscaping investments and ensuring sustainable water use. As a shared space for students and the broader community, maintaining an attractive and well-kept campus fosters community pride, supports recruitment and retention efforts and safeguards prior institutional investments.

Project: Upgrades to campus irrigation infrastructure to ensure sustainability and maintain campus beautification.

Total: $200,000

Other Critical University Projects

  • Increase funding for Mustang Athletics by $1.4 million to enhance mental health support services for student athletes, teams’ transportation costs and lodging.
  • Purchase of 16-passenger van to improve accessibility and support student-parent retention at the WNMU Child Development Center.
  • Increased funding for the WNMU Early Childhood and Out of School Time programs.
  • Increase funding to the School of Nursing to support accreditation costs, cohort expansion and faculty hires.
  • Expand funding web-based network for teacher licensure programs, providing local support for pre-service educators.
  • Increase of $243,000 to the School of Nursing for transitioning the Family Nurse Practitioner program to a fully online format, expanding access to rural and frontier communities.
  • Increase funding for the NM Center of Excellence for Early Childhood Education.
  • Purchase of three additional hybrid or electric fleet vehicles, expanding the university’s current fleet comprised of only two vehicles.
  • Purchase of equipment and medical expert consultation for Health and Human Performance labs to enhance hands-on learning for students, strengthening the university’s kinesiology program.
  • Production and promotion costs of upcoming publications through the university press.
